Jeff Bezos Backs Physical AI: Prometheus Raises $12B to Build "Artificial General Engineer"

Jeff Bezos has stepped out of retirement to co-lead Prometheus, a stealth AI startup that just secured a historic $12 billion Series B funding round. This massive injection of capital—backed by Wall Street giants like JPMorgan Chase, BlackRock, and Goldman Sachs—propels the company’s valuation to $41 billion, with total funding now exceeding $18 billion. Bezos is serving as Co-CEO alongside former Google executive Dr. Vikram "Vik" Bajaj, marking his first hands-on operational role since leaving Amazon in 2021. Despite its massive capital, the global team remains remarkably lean, operating with only about 150 employees split across offices in San Francisco, London, and Zurich.

Unlike standard AI companies focused on chatbots, Prometheus is building an "Artificial General Engineer" (AGE) to revolutionize heavy industry, medical devices, and aerospace. The platform automates the incredibly slow pre-production phase of manufacturing, which includes complex structural design, physics simulations, and material prototyping. Bezos notes that modifying a modern jet engine for 10% more thrust traditionally takes a grueling 10-year timeline due to safety and physical complexities. Prometheus aims to compress this traditional "dream-build loop" by making it 10 times faster, reducing decade-long hardware engineering timelines down to mere months.

Rather than replacing human workers, Bezos compares the AGE platform to giving engineers a "bulldozer instead of a shovel," arguing it will actually accelerate invention and boost physical manufacturing jobs. Because high-quality engineering and aerospace data cannot simply be scraped from the open internet, Prometheus is building its proprietary physics-based data models from scratch. While officially independent of Amazon, Bezos's space venture, Blue Origin, will serve as the startup's primary testing ground and first major customer. If the AI can successfully navigate the extreme physics and strict safety regulations of rocket science, Prometheus plans to deploy its software to transform the design of everyday physical infrastructure globally.
